Feasibility of and Requirements for a South African National Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Project

This report by Hussein Suleman and Jennifer A. de Beer has been submitted in May 2006 to Committee for Higher Education Librarians in South Africa (CHELSA). It describes national and international trends regarding Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Projects. The motivation and functions of a national project are outlined in the context of national and international ETD projects. The report covers the architecture of a national distributed ETD system; resources required, training aspects, technical requirements, interoperability with NDLTD Union Catalog, sustainability and preservation, as well as requirements for individual institutions. In conclusion eleven (11) recommendations were listed.
