Description of CollectionA.M. Duggan-Cronin bequeathed his collection of photos and negatives to the McGregor Museum. Approximately 6000 photos are of the indigenous peoples of southern Africa (South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Angola, Mocambique, Swaziland, Lesotho and Zambia.
Beneficiaries of Digitized CollectionIt is intended to produce books, museum displays and a web site in order to make the images accessible to the public and researchers. Three major displays have already been held, i.e., Kimberley (Duggan-Cronin Gallery, ongoing), Museum Africa (Johannesburg, ongoing) and Cape Town and a booklet has been printed (together with an additional edition in Zulu).
Justification for Digitization and PreservationThere was an urgent need to rescue this particular collection of negatives from deterioration as well as the safety of the entire collection as a whole. The negatives are mainly nitrate based which means they were inherently unstable and could spontaneously combust. These photos, taken between 1919 and 1939, have been described by, amongst others, Mr Nelson Mandela and Mrs A. Cartier-Bresson of the Paris Museum, as of outstanding quality and artistic merit and of international relevance.

Wild life in Development and usage of a first iteration of an online facility for panel members to access applicant documentation (application, RRAP sheets, status reports, reviewers' reports (and non-reports) and to be able to identify and select reviewers for applicants online took place in the period under review. This facility, when fully developed, should support the proposed expanded role of conveners. Usage by panel members since April brought to light good suggestions on how the proposed "tool" can be improved. Scoping of the user functionality needed will be the next step.
